Patriots: 5 thoughts on Day One of joint practices with the Eagles

The Patriots had an up snd down day in the first of two joint practices with the Eagles. There were a few highlights but there were a lot of lowlights we well. Here are my thoughts on practice number one with the Eagles.

1. Quarterbacks Struggle: Neither Cam Newton nor Mac Jones were good today. They struggled at various points in practice. Newton in particular was awful throwing seven total interceptions in the entire practice. Jones was better but he still threw three interceptions himself. Decision making, being late on reads and forcing the ball into bad spots continues to be an issue for both quarterbacks especially Newton.

2. LaCosse goes down: Tight End Matt LaCosse got lit up by EDGE Derek Barnett after Newton threw a ball at his feet. LaCosse was down for 30 seconds but eventually got on his feet and walked off. There was no update on his condition. The Patriots are down to Hunter Henry, Troy Fumagalli and Devin Asiasi at tight end.

3. Defense holds its own in team: The defense had some good moments today most notably EDGE Mathew Judon picking off Jalen Hurts and bringing it back for a pick six. Christian Barmore looked strong again in individual periods. Deatrich Wise and Henry Anderson also had a good practice.

4. Agholor shines against his former team: Agholor looked like the best receiver on the field. He ran sharp routes, showed an ability to consistently separate and he was explosive in skelly and one on one drills. Agholor found the end zone five times overall. He looked like a number one receiver.

5. Wilkerson regresses: Wide receiver Kristen Wilkerson had a tough day. Wilkerson has been one of the most consistent receivers for the Patriots thus far in camp. He played well in the pre-season opener and looks like a guy who has a legitimate shot at making the team. Today however, he looked like a journeyman and he picked the wrong time to struggle. Wilkerson will need to be better tomorrow and play well on Thursday night.
