Opinion: The Packers Need to “Pass” on a Brett Favre Reunion

By John Sarianides

Former Green Bay Packers great Brett Favre said in a radio interview on Thursday that he would like to return to the NFL someday as either a coach or in a front office capacity. Favre did not rule out a possible return to the Packers if the opportunity presented itself.

If the Packers are smart, they will “pass” on a Favre reunion. I know that sounds cold (no pun intended) given his legendary status but the Packers have a structure in place and it works. What would Favre add to the Packers structure that they don’t already have?

I know the Cheeseheads would love to see their hero back in some capacity but it makes no sense for the Packers to bring Favre back. While it is great that Favre and the organization have mended fences, it doesn’t mean that Favre should work for the team.

Favre referenced Bart Starr in his interview. Starr coached the team from 1975 to 1983 but the difference between Favre and Starr is, Starr was a life long Packer and went from playing to coaching. Favre has been retired since 2010 and his last season in Green Bay was 2007.

Time heals all wounds. The Packers and Favre are good with each other but that doesn’t mean the Packers should employ him. Unless of course they were hiring him in some community role where he can make appearances and organize camps or something. That would make sense. Of course Favre would never leave Kiln, Mississippi for a job like that because that job would be beneneth him.

Either way you slice it. The Packers should save themselves some coin and drama and stay away from Favre. Let the Vikings or some other organization hire him. Just because he’s a Packers legend doesn’t mean he should be on the Packers payroll.
