The Atlanta Falcons signed running back Devonta Freeman to a five year, $41.25 million dollar extension on Wednesday. The deal guarantees Freeman $22 million and he is scheduled to make $8.25 million per season.
Freeman is one of the most productive running backs in the league. He finished with 1,500 yards of total offense and 13 touchdowns. Freeman is a three down weapon who makes big plays both as a runner and as a receiver.
The Falcons had to pay the third year running back. Choosing to devalue his production would have been a big mistake. Freeman is young enough that he can be productive throughout the life of this extension.
It will be interesting to see what this extension means for Steelers running back LeVeon Bell. Bell has been franchised by the Steelers and is due to make $12.1 million this season. He is currently holding out of training camp.
You pay running backs early on their careers. That is why paying Freeman now makes so much sense. The two sides wanted to get it done and they did.
