Opinion: Early Signing Period Only Benefits the Blue Bloods of College Football.

By John Sarianides

On Monday the NCAA approved a three day early signing period which will take place between December 20th to the 22nd. The 72 hour window to sign coincides with the mid year junior signing period.

So what does this all mean? It means that recruits can now sign their national letters of intent with a school before National Signing Day which is the first Wednesday in February.

The beneficiaries of all of this are the college football blue blood programs and five star recruits. Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State and some of the other top recruiting programs in the country will now get a jump start on getting commitments from some of the top players in the country. This new rule certainly does not benefit the Kent State’s of the world.

Five star recruits also benefit because now they can commit earlier which means they can get on campus earlier. More and more kids are now graduating high school early so that they can participate in spring football. That trend will continue with even more kids graduating high school early so that they can get on campus.

The NCAA never does anything that actually benefits the student athletes. Everything they do is designed to make them and their member schools money. I have a hard time believing that moving the signing date up is anything more than a money making scam. Now they can get more T.V money from ESPN to broadcast which players sign where. Thus the point that this new deadline only benefits the blue bloods of college football.
