Coverage-Gate is nothing more than than a media creation. There is no story in Minnesota.
The national media is once again proving that they are nothing more than a bunch of pot stirrers looking to generate a story out of nothing.
The best example of this is what is going on right now with the Minnesota Vikings. The media has made a story out of two players who decided to freelance and not play within the game plan. Unbeknownst to the media, this happens all the time.
Now, before I rail against the national media, I do want to be clear about one thing. I do not condone what Xavier Rhodes and Terrance Newman did against the Packers.
What they did is selfish and insubordination. Newman has taken responsibility for what happened but that means nothing. As a veteran player, he should know better than to do what he did. Unfortunately for the Vikings, he allowed his ego to get the best of him.
For what it is worth, it is not the first time that a player or players have openly defied their coaches instructions. It happens all the time. In fact, coaches know it happens and most of the time they allow to go on, especially if they trust their players. Mike Zimmer trusts Terrance Newman.
I think this whole story has been blown out of proportion. It is something that should have been handled internally by Zimmer. The fact that someone inside the organization leaked the story to the media is the bigger issue. If I were Zimmer or GM Rick Speilman, that would concern me more than my cornerbacks freelancing.
I am sure that this is a non-story inside the Vikings locker room. Zimmer and Speilman have dealt with it and the organization is ready to move on. Unfortunately, the media won’t let it die.
They won’t let it die because it is too good a story to pass up. That’s why they are making a mountain out of a mole hill. What do you expect? That’s what some of these so called “media” members get paid to do. Generate buzz.
Mike Zimmer is a good man and a good coach. He is respected by his players, especially Newman who has coached in Dallas, Cincinnati and now Minnesota. If there is one guy in that locker room who respects Zimmer, it is him.
The media should move on. There is nothing to see he here. Sadly, I don’t see that happening. This story is too good to ignore in their eyes. They’ll keep talking about it until there is nothing left to say.
