In a significant move to solidify his coaching staff, newly appointed UConn head coach Jason Candle has officially named Nunzio Campanile as the program’s next offensive coordinator. The hiring, reported on by ESPN’s Pete Thamel marks a critical step in the Huskies’ transition following the departure of Jim Mora to Colorado State and the subsequent exit of previous coordinator Gordon Sammis to TCU.
Nunzio Campanile arrives in Storrs with a reputation as a versatile offensive mind and a great recruiter in the Northeast. While he has served in various interim capacities at the Power Four level, this role represents his first opportunity to serve as a full-time college offensive coordinator from the start of a season. His arrival is viewed as a bridge between the high-flying offensive success UConn enjoyed in 2024 and 2025 and the new vision Jason Candle brings from his successful tenure at Toledo.
Campanile most recently served on the staff at Syracuse, where he wore multiple hats over three seasons. Initially hired as a tight ends coach under Dino Babers, he gained national attention in 2023 when he was named interim head coach following Babers’ mid-season firing. He famously led the Orange to a victory over Wake Forest to clinch bowl eligibility, stabilizing a program in flux.
Under Fran Brown in 2024, Campanile transitioned to quarterbacks coach and associate head coach, where he oversaw the development of Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord. Under Campanile’s guidance, McCord led the nation in passing yards with 4,779, setting single-season records for both Syracuse and the ACC. This ability to maximize veteran quarterback talent is likely a primary reason Candle targeted him to lead the Huskies’ offense.
Before his time in the ACC, Campanile spent five seasons at Rutgers in various roles, including interim head coach and offensive coordinator. However, his most notable credentials may come from his legendary status in New Jersey high school football. As the head coach at Bergen Catholic, he led the Crusaders to a state championship in 2017 and compiled a 60–28 record. Prior to that, he spent a decade as the offensive coordinator at Don Bosco Prep, helping the program achieve six state titles and a national championship in 2009.
This deep connection to the “Jersey’s First Family of Football”—a nickname given to the Campanile family—provides UConn with an immediate recruiting advantage in one of the most talent-rich regions in the country. His history of developing NFL-caliber quarterbacks, including Mike Teel and Jarrett Guarantano, suggests a high ceiling for the Huskies’ future signal-callers.
Campanile is not the only new face joining the Huskies’ offensive room. UConn is also set to add John Morookian as the offensive line coach. Morookian, a Providence, Rhode Island native played for Candle at Toledo and recently coached at Michigan. He further reinforces the staff’s regional ties and familiarity with Candle’s offensive philosophy.
The challenge ahead for Campanile is significant. He inherits a unit that was among the most productive in school history but is currently facing heavy losses to the transfer portal. His first task will be to identify a replacement for record-setting quarterback Joe Fagnano and rebuild a backfield following the departure of star running back Cam Edwards.
