Jon Gruden appears to be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders.
I am going to focus on all of the coaching news that has taken place around the league this week. Here goes.
1.Let me start off by saying that Jack Del Rio got screwed in Oakland. I thought he did a good job turning the Raiders around in his three years there. Del Rio got squeezed out by Mark Davis because Davis has this weird affinity for Jon Gruden.
2. The Bears had to fire John Fox. It wasn’t working there. I don’t care about what Fox did in Carolina and Denver. Chicago needs to hire a young, offensive guy who can develop Mitchell Trubisky.
3. It was only a matter of time before Bob Quinn fired Jim Caldwell. Quinn didn’t hire him. Wasn’t his guy. It was inevitable.
4. Speaking of the Lions. Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will be the favorite to land the job in Detroit but I wouldn’t be surprised if Quinn went away from his Patriots connections and hired someone like Pat Shurmur.
5. Hue Jackson should have been fired in Cleveland. The fact that he wasn’t speaks to the dysfunction there. Owner Jimmy Haslem is the sole reason that organization continues to struggle and will for a long time.
6. The Colts should take a page out of the Rams playbook and hire someone like Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. He is young, bright and well respected around the league. Plus he is an Andy Reid disciple. That carries weight with owners around the league.
7. There are not too many so called “hot” coordinator out there right now. Outside of Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia, many of the names you are hearing are under the radar names. Matt Nagy, Dave Toub, George Edwards and Steve Wilks are all talented coaches who may not have name cache but are ready to lead a team.
8. Replacing Bruce Arians in Arizona will be a tall order. He won 50 games in five years. There are no in-house candidates. With Carson Palmer retiring and the possibility of the Cardinals drafting a quarterback, general manager Steve Keim may opt for a younger, offensive minded head coach.
9. Jim Schwartz would be a great hire by the Giants. Schwartz is a good coach who deserves another shot in the NFL. He would be a great fit in New York as well. Schwartz is media savvy but interesting at the same time.
10. The Broncos opted to keep Vance Joseph and instead, fired most of the offensive staff. That takes Joseph off the hook for now but he needs to prove he can coach this football team. He looked over his head at times last season.
