NFL At Large: Marshawn Lynch is Not a Hall of Famer.

Marshawn Lynch AKA Beast Mode announced his retirement on Sunday night right after the Super Bowl. Immediately after his announcement, football pundits everywhere began to ponder whether or not Lynch was a hall of famer. Here, let me put an end to this conversation. NO!

Lynch has posted some impressive numbers the past five years in Seattle including four seasons of over 1,200 yards rushing or more. In his ten year career between Buffalo and Seattle, Lynch rushed for over 1,000 yards six times. Overall, Lynch rushed for 9,112 yards and 74 rushing touchdowns. He also had 9 receiving touchdowns.

Those are good numbers but are they hall of fame worthy? I don’t think so. Former Giants running back Tiki Barber is a favorable comp statistically. Barber rushed for 10,449 yards but he also had fewer rushing touchdowns than Lynch with 55. Barber had 12 receiving touchdowns. Is Barber a hall of famer? Probably not. He won’t get in and neither should Lynch.

Lynch is in that hall of fame no mans land. If he just had a couple of more productive seasons, he’d get in. When I look at Lynch, I just don’t think the numbers are there. If guys like Lynch start being elected into the hall, then the Hall of Fame committee is really watering down the process in my opinion.

Marshawn Lynch was a good player but I don’t see a hall of famer when I look at his body of work. Despite my feelings, he’ll probably get in at some point. He won’t be a first ballot guy but he’ll eventually get in because the Hall of Fame is no longer a hall that represent great players and coaches, it represents good players and coaches.
