New England High School Round Up Weeks 6 & 7

Connecticut

Darien and Greenwich meet on Saturday at 1:30 in Greenwich in what should be one of the best games of the season thus far. Both are undefeated and there’s a contrast in style here with the Cardinals offense and the Blue Wave defense. Should be a great match up.

New Canaan looked impressive in a 45-7 win against St. Joe’s. The Cadets have had the Rams number in recent years but that all changed on Saturday. Rams host Wilton on October 21st.

Southington quarterback CJ DiBenedetto had a monster game last week. He threw seven touchdown passes in the first half and finished with 351 yards in a 52-14 win for the Blue Knights.

West Haven beat Hamden rather easily 47-21. The Blue Devils have a bye this week but their next two games are North Haven and Newtown who are a combined 8-1 going into this weekend.

Granby Memorial/Canton improved to 4-0 with a 39-13 win over North Branford. The Bears have been very good thus far this season. They are led by running back, linebacker Will Attianese who is one of the best two way players in Connecticut.

Maine

Leavitt visits Thornton Academy tonight in what should be the best game of the weekend in Maine. Leavitt is having another great season and the Hornets offense has been putting big numbers as usual. The Trojans have been playing well defensively of late so that’s what makes this match up so intriguing.

Portland will look to move to 7-0 when they visit Scarborough this weekend. At last check, the Bulldogs are still looking for a game next weekend.

Kennebunk will also look to remain undefeated. They beat Sanford last week and travel to South Portland this week. The Rams potent ground game has been the difference for them thus far.

Messalonskee is also undefeated in Class B and with the playoffs around the corner, the expectation is that they are on a collision course with Kennebunk. The Eagles are at Lawrence and Mt. Blue to finish the season.

Speaking of Lawrence. So many intriguing teams in Class B. Marshwood and Deering are two other programs to keep an eye on. Could be the most fun class to watch in the playoffs.

Massachusetts

Catholic Memorial somehow found a way to beat Xaverian last week and remain the top team in our Massachusetts poll. They have the St. John’s each of the next two weeks. Shrewsbury this week and the Prep next week.

Some intriguing games in the Hockomock League this weekend. You have the battle of the Warriors between King Philip and Foxboro and Franklin hosts Central Catholic. Both KP and Foxboro are undefeated. Not only that, but Foxboro Coach Jack Martinelli is going for his 300th win. It’ll be a great night.

Springfield Central is the top team in Western, Mass but for the second straight, they will face off against a local opponent that could make a run in their respective division. Last week it was Minnechaug whom Central beat 38-10. This week it is a tough Westfield team.

It has been a long time since the Salem football program was this good. The Witches are 5-0 and have a stiff test this week against 4-1 Lynn Classical and their high flying offense.

Size doesn’t matter in Massachusetts High School Football. There are some good lower division programs. I mentioned Salem but Uxbridge, Amesbury, Lynnfield and Dartmouth are programs who have had great seasons thus far and have surprised people.

New Hampshire

Great to see Pinkerton and Brockton renewing their interstate rivalry this weekend. Last season’s match up was one of the best games I saw all season.

One week away from Souhegan and Pelham. The Pythons are at Milford this week while the Sabers travel to Hanover. Both teams need to play well this weekend and cannot look ahead to next week’s showdown.

Newport improved to 5-0 after beating Bishop Brady. The play Franklin this week but they are well positioned to make a run in Division IV.

Fall Mountain improved to 5-1 with a win over Stevens. Next up is Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough Academy who at 4-2 is another legitimate contender in Division 3.

Big one tonight for Londonderry hosting Exeter. The Lancers need to keep pace in D1 and need this one. Exeter however has proven that they can keep pace with the big boys in the state.

Rhode Island

It is Hendricken, LaSalle week. The best rivalry in the state. The Hawks will look to avenge last season’s state title loss. The Rams are playing much better if Kate and coming off of their best win of the season against North Kingstown.

Speaking of North Kingstown, they host Barrington in what should be a doozy of a game. Barrington has been impressive thus far. NK needs a win for seeding purposes in the playoffs.

Woonsocket at Portsmouth is another intriguing cross divisional match up. The Villa Novans are one of the favorites in Division 3. A win over the Patriots would solidify their standing.

Big test for Mt. Pleasant this week as they travel to St. Ray’s in what should be one of the better match-ups in D2.

The game of the week in D3 features West Warwick hosting Johnston. Two teams that have championship aspirations and are in the state title conversation with Lincoln. The Lions for what it’s worth visit Chariho.

Vermont

Hartford is well on their way to an undefeated season. The Hurricanes have a winnable game this week against a struggling Mount Anthony team.

Burr & Burton has bounced back nicely with back to back big wins after their loss to Hartford but they have a sneaky tough match up this week when they visit a good Essex team.

Fair Haven and U-32 meet this weekend in what should be one of the best match-ups in Vermont. Division 2 is shaping up to be an interesting division. Multiple teams are contenders.

5-0 Windsor has an interesting match-up this weekend against Springfield. The Cosmos are 3-3 but have played some close games and they have gotten blown in other games.
