New backup QB Joshua Dobbs ready to help Maye however he can

FOXBOROUGH – Joshua Dobbs has been the definition of a journeyman quarterback since first entering the NFL in 2018.

In those seven years, Dobbs has played for Pittsburgh, Arizona, Minnesota, Tennessee and San Francisco. He’s appeared in 23 games, starting 15 of them, throwing for 3,281 yards and 17 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. Nothing to write home about, but when you hear him speak, it’s clear why Mike Vrabel wanted him in the QB room.

Dobbs met the New England media for the first time on Tuesday afternoon and talked about the various stops in his young career, particularly about what makes a good quarterback room. Which, you can make the argument hasn’t been the case for a while in New England when it comes to guys getting along and not constantly looking over their shoulders.

“That’s what I’ve enjoyed at the stops I feel like I’ve been most successful. For me, it’s a healthy quarterback room,” Dobbs said. “Whoever the guy is out there on Sunday, it’s everyone’s job in that room to make sure they’re supported and ready to go and ready to play. Obviously, for my role, it’s insuring that, as we learn the offense together, that Drake feels comfortable and he can go out there and play at a high level.

“We want to have a healthy quarterback room. Obviously competitive, push each other every single day. But, any day whoever’s out there we want them to go out and play the best football they can…we all as a team we all are supporting each other. We all want to be the best versions of ourselves every time we step into the building, every time we step out on the field.”

Drake Maye has done his best to show Dobbs around so far, but it’s the second-year QB’s golf game that might have impressed Dobbs the most to this point.

“Drake’s been awesome, kind of showing me around. Like, inside and outside the building,” said Dobbs. “It’s been good to hit the ground running. The first time I met him we were down at the NFL PA event in Cancun, the golf tournament. He can hit the crap out of it with a driver. It was good to get the chance to meet each other outside of a football environment.”

It’s not just Maye’s golf game that impressed Dobbs early, but he can sense just how much of a ‘football guy’ Maye is too based on everything else he’s seen from the young QB.

“Since being in the building, man, the kid loves football,” he said. “It’s really good to be around that every morning…as a young guy, I think curiosity is very interesting. He’s very curious. This is his second year, the second scheme he’s had…you see the questions that he asks. His engagement each day within the QB room and his preparation coming into the room.

“Not only preparation in our own interpersonal meetings with Coach McDaniels, but also out on the field. As we go out there and lead a new offense, you can always tell who loves football, who loves the learning aspect of it. He definitely does that.”
