FOXBOROUGH – It was another cloudy but comfortable day behind Gillette Stadium on Thursday as the Pats were back out for Day 2 of training camp.
Practice went just about 15 minutes longer than it did on Monday, with a few noteworthy things happening. It’s worth prefacing all of these write ups for the next few days by saying it’s really hard to take much away from what’s going on, but there are things to keep an eye on. Until the pads come on Monday, these are still just glorified OTA type practices.
Anyway, here’s what stood out from the hillside starting from about 10:00 when I got there…
-Once again Michael Jordan was the first player out.
-The crowd was light again and very late arriving. The most noticeable difference the first two days is when Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye each take the field there is little to no roar or ovation. Since Brady left, Cam Newton and Mac Jones both received huge cheers every time they came out. I wonder if the low expectations for Maye this season and knowing what Brissett is is what’s ultimately just taking any attachment away for fans. It’s startling when Judon is the only one getting cheers.
-Sony Michel was the pre-practice guest with ‘Sarge’ from 98.5 The Sports Hub and Danny Amendola was also in the house taking in practice. Safe to say he wouldn’t be around if BB was still here.
-Jalen Reagor, KJ Osborn (who looks bigger than I expected), Ja’Lynn Polk, Marcus Jones and Demario Douglas fielded punts for a bit. The team also worked on its return game a bit for the first time, but nothing too crazy and we haven’t seen anything relating to the new kickoff formations yet. Polk’s had some bobble issues during this time too, worth keeping an eye on.
-After stretching, the team had a long dynamic warmup focusing on agility while running.
-For the second straight day, Indy period lasted just about an hour, with a real focus seemingly on the fundamentals for each position group. There were maybe 10-15 minutes of these under BB (at least since I’ve been covering the team) and that’s it. Brissett, Zappe, Maye and then Milton went during the net throwing drill for the second straight day, but that didn’t last long…
-A few quick minutes of 1-on-1 angle/elusiveness drills for the offense and defense before the first team period got started right around noon.
-Highlight of the first drive was a great PBU for Marcus Jones deep down the right sideline against Polk. Brissett laid a great ball in but Jones stayed with it and knocked the ball free as they both hit the ground. Brissett also had a couple short completions to Hunter Henry (low throw) and JuJu Smith-Schuster (screen).
-Nothing happening for Maye on this possession. Just a scramble up the middle (he absolutely does not hesitate when he sees a lane) and dump offs/checkdowns to Kevin Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson.
-Interesting development with Vederian Lowe getting significant looks up front along with Brendan Schooler getting plenty of reps at safety. I wrote about this in minicamp, it seems like they’re going to give him a legitimate shot to play on that side of the ball this season.
-On to 7-on-7 and there wasn’t much here either. Brissett had a few completions to Kayshon Boutte and Tyquan Thornton – who might have been the best receiver on the team Thursday – and Jabrill peppers had a really nice PBU deep against Jaheim Bell. Maye completed passes to Reagor, Stevenson, Thornton, Osborn, Javon Baker and Mitchell Wilcox. 99% of all the QB’s completions for the entire practice were short or over the middle, nothing deep, most likely on purpose.
-Joe Milton took reps over Zappe here and again in the next 11-on-11 session. The O-line didn’t help either guy (or any of the QB’s) all day and Judon, Keion White and Joe-Giles Harris all were disruptive in both periods.
-In the final bit of 11-on-11, Brissett had an ugly incompletion rolling to his right on a play action pass thanks to pressure from Judon. He missed a screen to Kevin Harris and Giles-Harris had a would-be sack along with White adding pressure. White flew off the edfe around Chuks Okorafor (rough day) and had a would-be sack a play later. Deatrich Wise had an easy sack before a ‘completion’ to Osborn. Maye hit Polk on a slant and Bell had a drop on a great throw, but that was it. After the Polk slant Brissett quickly dapped Maye up.
-Antonio Mafi had a brutal high snap during a few Milton reps and Milton was literally throwing the ball too hard for guys to handle at times throughout the day. Boutte had a drop late before hauling in a quick out.
-Both Milton and Brissett seemed to struggle getting out of the huddle properly at one point, with Alex Van Pelt stopping them both once, having them re-call the play and then line up again.
-RKK came out at 12:36 and provided arguably the most interesting moment of the day, stopping to chat with Matt Judon for a good minute or two on the sideline. RKK was also seen chatting with Eliot Wolf when the team went to the hill for conditioning too. Could it have been a contract negation continuing in real time? Maybe.
-Pop Douglas didn’t participate in team drills, nor did Marte Mapu. Davon Godchaux was at practice but did not participate as he too looks for a new contract, although he did on Day 1, which made the Thursday absence strange.
Day 3 of camp is Friday and once again open to the public with gates opening at 10 a.m. The team is off on Saturday before getting back into it for three straight days Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
