NCAA Football: Doc’s Bowl Predictions for January 1st 2016

Kizer vs. Barrett will be the quarterback match up of the day.

Outback Bowl: (13) Northwestern Wildcats vs. (23) Tennessee Volunteers: Ilove this match up. It should be fun. Northwestern is known for their offense but they play great defense. They’ll need to today against a Volunteers offense that features one of the best backfields in the country in Joshua Dobbs and Jalen Heard. They’ll give the Cats all they can handle. Tennessee has had trouble against physical defenses but I think they’ll buck that trend today. Look for the Vols to pound the rock and get a much needed win as they try to make a statement heading into 2016. Prediction: Tennessee 30 Northwestern 21

Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl: (14) Michigan Wolverines vs. (19) Florida Gators: I like the Gators in this one. As we saw last night in the Clemson, Oklahoma game, speed kills. I think the Gators have the speed advantage. Both of these programs are on an uptick and they could be in the national championship hunt in 2016. For today, I like Florida. I just think they are a little faster and they are used to playing in the warm Florida air. They’ll win today. Prediction: Florida 34 Michigan 31
BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl: (8) Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. (7) Ohio State Buckeyes: I think the Buckeyes will be chomping at the bit to prove that they deserved to be in the college football playoff. After last night, they do! Notre Dame’s running game could be an issue with Adolphus Washington out but the Bucks still have Joey Bosa and I think they’ll move him around so that they could account for Washington being out. This will be a back and forth affair but Ohio State is the more balanced team and that’s why I think they’ll win this game. Prediction: Ohio State 31 Notre Dame 28

Rose Bowl Game: (6) Stanford Cardinal vs. (5) Iowa Hawkeyes: This will be an old school, blue collar game between two physical offenses that are physical and run the football. The key match up in this game will be Stanford’s ground game versus Iowa’s defense. I don’t think the Cardinal have seen a defense that is so well coached and physical. Conversely, Stanford’s defense will have its hands full with Jordan Canzeri and the Hawkeyes ground game. Tight games like this come down to quarterback play and protecting the football. I have to give the edge to Kevin Hogan and Stanford. Hogan has played in plenty of big games and he can handle the pressure of playing in this game.

Allstate Sugar Bowl: (16) Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. (12) Ole Miss Rebels: Call me crazy but I’m taking the Pokes in this game. They haven’t played in the Sugar Bowl since 1945 but who cares! Okie State plays fast and they play faster than Ole Miss who plays fast themselves. Both teams can score so expect a high scoring affair. As always, it’s comes down to quarterback play. Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly will have a big day but I think Mason Rudolph and JW Walsh will have a bigger day. Two is better than one folks. I think the Cowboys will score enough to win this shootout. It helps that Robert Nkemdiche is out. That’ll make it easier for the Pokes to move the ball. Prediction: Oklahoma State 45 Ole Miss 42
