Michael Onwemu agrees to restructured contract

The New England Patriots and veteran offensive lineman Mike Onwenu have agreed to a major contract restructure, providing the team with significant financial flexibility ahead of the summer.

Onwenu, who was entering the final year of the three-year, $57 million extension he signed back in 2024, has reworked his deal into an effective one-year, $10 million pact. The maneuver provides a massive assist to New England’s front office, freeing up cap space as they fine-tune the roster.

Here is a breakdown of the new deal.

Onwemu agreed to a new 1-year, $10M deal that includes:

• $7.5M pay cut

• Base salary lowered to $2.95M + $6M signing bonus

• All money fully guaranteed

• Cap hit reduced by $7.5M to $17.5M

What This Means for Both Sides

For the Patriots: Clearing $7.5 million in cap space pushes New England’s available funds past the $42 million mark. This allows the front office maximum flexibility to pursue late-offseason trades, look at upcoming contract extensions for young cornerstones, or absorb contract hits in a potential roster shake-up.

For Mike Onwenu: While the 28-year-old tackle/guard takes a top-line pay cut for the upcoming season, the trade-off is absolute security. By converting his contract structure into fully guaranteed money, Onwenu protects his earnings, solidifies his starting role, and positions himself to hit the open free-agent market cleanly next offseason.

Onwenu has been an incredibly durable centerpiece of the Patriots’ front five since being drafted out of Michigan in 2020. Keeping him locked in to protect young quarterback Drake Maye while simultaneously freeing up cap space counts as an absolute win-win for Foxborough.
