Patriots coach Jerod Mayo made his first appearance of the season on the Greg Hill Show earlier this morning and talked about a wide range of topics ahead of Sunday’s preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.
Mayo addressed the quarterback situation and he reiterated that Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye are in a quarterback competition and that Maye has a shot at winning the competition and starting week one.
“100%, and we’re still in training camp,” said Mayo. “We still have, you know, our preseason game against Washington. And once again, we don’t have a starting quarterback right now. When it’s time, we’ll announce that.”
Mayo added: “But he could absolutely be QB1, so could Jacoby. So we just got to see how it plays out.”
The comments are a drastic change from what we have seen in training camp thus far. The coaching staff has exclusively repped Maye with the second team but that changed this past weekend with him getting more reps with the one’s.
Maye helped himself on Thursday night with a solid performance against the Philadelphia Eagles. He went 6-of-11 for 47 yards and had four carries for 15 yards and a rushing touchdown. Jacoby Brisset on the other hand struggled going 3-of-7 for 17 yards and an interception.
Despite proclaiming that this is an open competition, Mayo did say that the Patriots are still sticking to their development plan with Maye.
“We’re gonna stick to the plan. It may not be a popular plan but we’re doing what we think is right for the organization – not only in the near term but long term.”
The plan is in place for now but a strong showing by Maye against Washington could alter the plan permanently.
