Matthew Slater is entering his 16th season in the NFL. Best known for being one of the best special teams players in the league and one of the greatest special teams players of all-time, it is easy to talk about what Slater has done on the field.
Slater however doesn’t just want to be remembered for what he accomplished on the field. He wants to be remembered for what he did off the field as well and how he gave back to his community.
When asked about his legacy of service and giving back to the community, Slater shared what it means to him to be an active participant in his community.
“It is really what is going to carry eternal value right? What we do on the football field, what I did in 2010 and 2012, very few people are going to remember that. ” Slater added: “But I think people always remember the personal touch and the interaction with them.”
Slater’s commitment to his community and helping others comes from his parents whom he credits with instilling in him a greater sense of purpose than just being a football player.
“I think it is important to be mindful of how we are using our platform and how we are giving back. The bible says to whom much is given, much is required.” Slater continued: “I don’t think the lord has blessed me so that my family and I can benefit only. He blessed us so we can bless other. That is how my family has operated. It is how I operated since I was a child because my parents did that.”
Slater’s commitment to community service is well documented in the region. He has hosted Community Jamborees in Boston and Providence and he is actively involved in his church in Foxboro. Slater was the recipient of the 2013 Ron Burton Community Service Award.
It is easy for professional athletes to reflect on what they did on the field or on the court during their careers. The special ones however have a broader perspective. That is what makes Matthew Slater special. He recognizes that life is much more than just professional accomplishments.
It is about impacting others and leaving a last impact beyond the field. Slater has certainly done that and he will continue to do that long after his playing career is over.
It is why Slater is universally respected by his coaches, peers and members of the media. He is a gentleman and a great representation of the Patriots organization, his family and the community.
