Early on Monday morning, the Braintree Police Department announced Jabrill Peppers’ arrest Monday, saying they responded to an issue at a home early Saturday morning when they had been notified there was an altercation between two people.
According to the police, Peppers will be charged with “assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a Class B substance believed to be cocaine.” He was set to be arraigned in a Quincy court on Monday.
Peppers missed Sunday’s game after appearing on the Patriots injury report throughout the week. During his usual weekly Zoom call with the media on Monday morning, Mayo said the team was still gathering information, but that Peppers is still welcome in the facility as of now.
“He called me the morning of,” Mayo said when asked when he knew about the incident. “As we gather information, he can definitely be in the building. We don’t know enough to say he shouldn’t be in the building.”
Peppers – a team captain – is one of the physical and vocal leaders on the team. With so many guys going down early this season, this type of situation is worst case scenario for Mayo in his first year as head coach.
The Patriots released a statement saying they’re “aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating,” and that no further comment would be coming.
Mayo also noted that this is another learning lesson for the team and he addressed it with them this morning.
“Yeah, I’ve already addressed it with the team,” Mayo added. “All through training camp, all through the season, we talk about situations that happen around the league so we can learn from other people. This was …as we gather information, I think the players need to know about it so we can learn from whatever happened.”
