I’m Just Sayin: The NFL Once Again Proves Its All About the Money with the Relocation to Los Angeles.

Inspector Clouseau look a like Stan Kroenke got his way and moved the Rams back to L.A.

NFL owners once again proved last night that the NFL is a business and if the opportunity presents itself to make more money, they are willing to just about do anything. That includes relocating a team for the sake of relocation.

That is exactly what happened with the Rams yesterday. Unlike the Chargers and Raiders, the Rams didn’t need to move. In fact, the city of St. Louis was willing to build them a new stadium unlike San Diego and Oakland. So why did they move? Money.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke is a billionaire. He’s one of the richest owners in the league. You would think he’s content financially but obviously that’s not the case. Kroenke wants to make more money. He knew he couldn’t generate the type of revenue he desired in a small market like St. Louis so he decided to make a play to move the Rams back to Los Angeles. Kroenke has west coast ties so I’m sure that was a motivating factor as well but in the end, its all about the money. Los Angeles is the second largest market in sports. The city presents the league with more opportunities both on and off the field. The allure of the market was just too much to pass up for Kroenke and the other owners.

I feel bad for St. Louis but what happened to them is a sad reality of pro sports today. Its not about the city or the fans, its about the owner. If the owner of a team doesn’t want to be in the city he’s currently in, he’ll make a play to move, especially if he can leave for a bigger market. The NFL has been trying to get back to Los Angeles for years, when they saw their opening, they took it. That’s what happens when a bunch of rich guys in a room make decisions.

Commissioner Roger Goodell did say last night that St. Louis would have the opportunity to gain an NFL franchise down the road but unless another city is stripped of their team like St. Louis was or the league expands to 34 teams, that’s not going to happen. St. Louis will never have a football team again. Then again, you never know. Money talks and people walk. Who knows? Maybe in 2017, we’ll see the debut of the St. Louis Raiders. Its the NFL. When it comes to making more money, anything is possible. I’m just saying.
