If this is in fact Belichick’s last week, you wouldn’t know it

For most of us, knowing the end is near at a place of employment could lead to a number of different actions.

There could be a sense of disappointment and possibly a drive to mend some fences before leaving. For others, they could completely shut down, barely interact with co-workers and simply watch their final hours tick away. Or, for some with a sense of humility, maybe an apology or two here or there, or at least a change in demeanor and tone when speaking with people.

Not Bill Belichick.

Belichick took the the podium inside Gillette Stadium on Wednesday as he does each week and if you didn’t know any better, you’d think it was just a normal week during any of the 23 seasons he’s been coaching the team.

Clearly, this isn’t a normal week though. To his credit, as the fate of Belichick’s time in New England is still up in the air, he isn’t changing one bit. Belichick refused to talk about his job status when asked if he’s spoken with RKK about his future.

“Yeah, I’m looking forward to working, getting ready for the Jets here,” he said bluntly.

Belichick was also asked if he’d consider sitting guys to play some others as sort of an evaluation period during the final game.

No shot.

“Players want to play – practiced, worked all year to play. If they can play, I wouldn’t not play them,” he said. “I think that’s fair to the player. I don’t know, maybe you see it differently.”

When asked about the Jets, Belichick could barely muster a slight complement for head coach Robert Saleh.

“I have a lot of respect for what Coach [Robert] Saleh has done. Put together a pretty good team down there,” said Belichick.

Whatever happens in the meeting with RKK and Belichick following the regular season finale (or maybe even before then this week), Belichick is going down with the ship in Costanza fashion and isn’t allowing the uncertainty to change the way he’s going about his business.

Fittingly, the former HC of the NYJ may be coaching his final game against Gang Green as HC of the NEP, but you wouldn’t know the awkwardness level around 1 Patriot Place is at an all time high this week.
