The Hockomock League and Catholic Conference announced their second annual showcase days on Monday.
The Hockomock League will hold their showcase on Sunday May 11th from 3-7 pm at Mansfield High School. The Catholic Conference will be holding their showcase on Thursday May 15th from 5 to 8 pm at Xaverian High School.
Both events were big hits last season as multiple colleges attended. The showcases are designed to get college coaches in front of high school kids and give them an opportunity to showcase what they can do. Athletes are tested and put through on field drills in a combine style format.
The showcases are especially important for Division 2 and 3 college coaches who primarily recruit local talent. It gives them an opportunity to get an in person look at the players they are recruiting. The event is also important for Division One coaches who may find a player they previously did not have on their recruiting radar.
Showcases have become more prominent in recent years, especially with private schools. Public and Catholic schools are now doing their own showcases in an attempt to promote their players but also to combat players leaving for private schools.
Xaverian coach Al Fornaro says that the showcases are an opportunity for exposure for the players.
“I believe that it gives them exposure to many colleges at once with their focus being on the athleticism of each participant. If nothing else, it gives them insight into the young man and whether or not he will spark any interest and maybe be invited to one of their camps.”
Taunton coach Brad Sidwell says that gives players a chance to get in front of coaches.
“Recruiting has changed dramatically. Best way for a player to be noticed is to be physically in front of the college coaches. Coaches can judge size and movement abilities for themselves, in addition to film/highlights.” Sidwell continued: “All of the coaches in the Hock have strong relationships with New England colleges and universities. Just think it is great way to promote the players from our league.”
Several other leagues and conferences have showcase days scheduled as well. When we get that information, we will pass it along.
