CHESTNUT HILL – There’s no one currently living in New England that knows Drake Maye better than BC tight end Kamari Morales. Aside from Maye’s family, of course.
Morales – who is playing his final year of college football at BC under Bill O’Brien – was a teammate of Drake Maye’s at North Carolina. Maye and Morales were close both on and off the field.
Following Boston College’s eighth training camp practice on Sunday morning, I asked Morales what fans should know about the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft. Morales wanted to talk more about him as a person than a player.
“As far as what fans should expect, I’m just going to tell you about him as a person,” he said. “Great dude. Shows up every day. He’s going to work hard. He’s going to ride for his players.”
There’s been some scuttlebutt that Maye might not be learning as quickly as the Patriots’ staff would like since we only saw him for one drive in the preseason opener. Morales noted that Maye wasn’t a big party guy at UNC, so fans shouldn’t worry about him not being all in on the football side of things.
“I never saw him out one time when I was at UNC,” he said. “Granted, I wasn’t out a lot, but you don’t see him out. He’s very quiet, very humble. He’s going to work hard.”
As far as what fans will (hopefully) get on the field? Morales preached patience – just like the Pats have – and ultimately, he believes New England will grow to love Drake.
“As far as his play…I’m going to let his play speak for itself,” he added. “I’m not going to put pressure or give him expectations. I think a lot of fans here are probably used to seeing Brady. My message to New England fans is don’t put that expectation or that pressure on Drake.
“Just let him go out there and be Drake. I promise you you’ll be happy.”
