Former Patriots executive and coach Bobby Grier has passed away at the age of 82. Grier, the father of Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier and former NHL player and current San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier spent the majority of his career in New England.
After three seasons as the running backs coach at Boston College (1978-80), Grier joined the Patriots in 1981 as the team’s running backs coach under Ron Erhardt. He went on to serve in a variety of roles, including as a scout (1982-85), coach (1981, 1985-92), director of pro scouting (1993-94), director of player personnel (1995-96) and ultimately as vice president of player personnel from 1997 to 2000.
Grier’s influence and decision making helped shape the foundation of the Patriots modern era.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft praised Grier in a statement upon learning of his passing.
“Bobby Grier was a man of tremendous integrity,” said Kraft. “He broke barriers and built bridges, and his legacy will forever be part of our franchise’s history. We are grateful for his years of service and the impact he had on so many people within our organization and across the NFL. My thoughts are with his family and all who are mourning his loss.”
