First & Ten: Ten Thoughts on Everything That’s Going On In the World of Football

By John Sarianides

1.Super Bowl 51 will have plenty of story lines but I think we all agree that the number one story line involves Roger Goodell and Tom Brady. Brady would love nothing more than to win his fifth Super Bowl title and shove it up Goodell’s you know what.

2. Will the Patriots give the Falcons offense the Rams treatment? I think they will. Look for New England to be physical with Atlanta’s running backs and receivers in an effort to re-route them. I think New England can stop Atlanta’s running game with a seven man box.

3. I can’t say I am surprised that Ben Roethlisberger is contemplating retirement. He has not aged well. He can’t move like he used to and the physical wear and tear is starting to catch up with him.

4. The Cleveland Browns overpaid Jaime Collins. He is not worth $12.5 million per season. They had to however. Who the hell else is going to take their money?

5. Speaking of the Browns. They asked quarterback Deshaun Watson to play in the Senior Bowl and he denied their request. Maybe that’s why Watson is dropping in a lot of people’s mock drafts. Word is, people around the league were not happy when he declined to play in the Senior Bowl.

6. The Washington Redskins hired former 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula as their new defensive line coach. Tomsula is an excellent position coach despite the fact that he looks like a washed up porn star.

7.  Jim Harbaugh has done it again. Somehow, Harbaugh bamboozled Michigan into allowing him to spend a week of spring ball in Rome. That’s right. Michigan will going to Rome in April for a “week of education and spring drills”. The trip will come at the end of the semester. Harbaugh is such a shyster! He really, truly is a slime ball when it comes to this stuff.

8. Willie Taggart is off to a tough start at Oregon. First his strength and conditioning coach gets suspended because his workouts led to three players being hospitalized. Now his recently hired co-offensive coordinator is about to canned for a DUI. Not the start Taggart was hoping to get off to in his first season in Eugene.

9.  I am curious to see how the Colts GM search will play out. I still think Jimmy Raye III is the guy. Why not? He has gotten interviews elsewhere and he is already in the building.

10. Cal coach Justin Wilcox made a great hire in former Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter as his new defensive coordinator. Between Wilcox’s 4-3 philosophy and DeRuyter’s experience in the 3-4 and 33 Stack defenses, Cal will be pretty multiple on defense.
