Final public practice for the Patriots goes to the defense

FOXBOROUGH – Roughly 8,000 fans got to see the Patriots in pads for the final time on Sunday until the opener against the Raiders.

And it wasn’t pretty if you were hoping for some of the offense New England showed in the first preseason game.

With most of the practice geared towards red zone work – as Mike Vrabel said would be the case beforehand – the offense had it’s moments (mostly during 7-on-7), but both Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs struggled to get into any kind of rhythm and the offensive line had its struggles as well, particularly late in the session.

Here’s how it all went down…

-The practice opened up with some 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 work for the receivers and DBs on one field and the O-line and D-line on the other. It was also ‘family day’ for the media, so I didn’t catch much of this getting my mom and grandmother all squared away. Shout out to the PR team for a fantastic experience for the families (Stacey James, Aaron Salkin, Steph Burnham, Julia Palin, Griffin Clark and Badi Cross), as well as Coach Vrabel for taking time to go around greeting every table and posing for photos when he absolutely didn’t have to, especially given how damn hot it was.

-1st ‘live’ period, 7-on-7 red zone:

Maye: PBU for Christian Elliss against Austin Hooper, touchdown to Hooper, TD in the back left corner to Diggs (probably Maye’s best throw of the day) against DJ James, PBU for Elliss and probably should have been picked vs. Pop.

Dobbs: TD to Efton Chism III on a crosser, dropped TD by Mack Hollins in the back right corner vs. Alex Austin, PBU in the end zone for Kobee Minor vs. Kyle Williams.

Maye: Crosser to TreVeyon Henderson, but it looked like a bit of a mixup with two guys in the same spot, incomplete pass high in the end zone for Hooper, diving TD catch along the back line (with a somersault) by Hollins, TD on an out to Kayshon Boutte

Dobbs: TD on a crosser to Chsim III against Brandon Crossley, incompletion to Cole Fotheringham, TD in the back right corner to Hollins.

-Full team RZ period:

Maye: Run by Antonio Gibson, Marcus Jones snuffs out a screen, Craig Woodson appeared to scoop a ball off the ground for an INT, but it was ultimately ruled incomplete by Vrabel (still an ugly throw), Harold Landry blows up a run in the backfield (might have been a miscommunication again).

Dobbs: Crosser to Jack Westover, short completion to JaMyca Hasty, out to Chism III, short completion to Fotheringham.

Maye: Gibson gets stuffed (couldn’t see by who), short run by Gibson, incompletion to Williams against Austin (Maye gave Williams no shot), hard run by Henderson on a toss.

Dobbs: (I missed the first snap sneezing, seriously), throw in the dirt, sack untouched up the middle by Jack Gibbens, quick out to Hasty (Jack Conley and Truman Jones were matched up for this snap, with Conley doing a great job holding up against a strong rush by Jones).

-Field goal period:

I had Andy Borregales going 4-4 and Parker Romo 3-4, but others had it the other way. Both guys’ final kicks were questionable, with one barely sneaking inside the upright and the other going directly over the top of it. Either way, it feels like Borregales’ job to lose.

-More team red zone, ball at the 10:

Maye: Short run by Gibson, PBU for Jones against Hollins in the end zone, incomplete through the back of the end zone for Diggs against Woodson, PBU for Carlton Davis III vs. Chism III. DBs had really good coverage all day even when they didn’t make the play.

Dobbs: Wide open TD to Hollins on a well-designed and executed play, iffy TD to Hollins where he may or may not have gotten both feet in, Chism III makes the play of the day with a jump ball TD in the left corner with Jones draped all over his back, quick TD to Fotheringham, PBU for Austin against Chism III.

-One more situational series. 1:05 on the clock, ball on the opposing team’s 40 or 45:

Maye: Sack by K’Lavon Chaisson (he blew by Will Campbell basically the entire series) while technically a completion went to Pop, bad/low snap by Bradbury, sack by Chaisson with a technical completion to Boutte, Landry forces a flush out and scramble by Maye, out to Pop, incomplete in the end zone for Hollins (high), PBU by Jones on a jump ball against Hollins, more pressure for Chaisson but Diggs drops a wide open TD at the goal line.

Vrabel called it up from there and the Pats broke it down. One more practice on Monday before the team departs Tuesday for another important week of joint practices with a very talented Minnesota team. Saturday’s preseason game is a 1:00 p.m. start.
