Fantasy Football: Drafting a Quarterback Later is Smarter

By John Sarianides

I was watching ESPN’s fantasy football marathon last night and fantasy guru Matthew Berry made a great point regarding quarterbacks. Berry said that he wouldn’t draft a quarterback early. He is right.

Other than Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and maybe Drew Brees, there is no reason to draft a quarterback before the fifth round.

There is so much depth at the quarterback position that you can wait until the sixth, seventh or eighth round before you draft your signal caller.

The problem is, most people will panic by round four and start drafting guys like Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson Cam Newton and Matt Ryan. They will draft them earlier than they should and that is a mistake.

Let those guys go! I will. I am going to wait until the eighth or ninth round before I draft a quarterback. In a ten team league, I can still get a Kirk Cousins or Matthew Stafford there. I can even wait a little longer and take either Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger or Eli Manning in rounds ten or eleven.

The quarterback position is deep. Don’t waste an early round pick on one. Stock up on running backs and wide receivers and then take a quarterback. It makes sense if you really think about it.
