Fantasy Football: 5 Value Running Backs for 2018

Running backs are once again the most prized commodity in fantasy football. Remember three years ago when receivers and quarterbacks were the apples of most fantasy owners eyes? Not anymore. It is all about loading up at running back.

Most fantasy owners panic if they miss out on LeVeon Bell, Ezekiel Elliott, David Johnson or Kareem Hunt. Don’t worry about it. The running back position is as deep as it has been in a long time. There are plenty of quality options, especially in the middle rounds.

Here are five names you should target in your draft.

5. Marlon Mack, Colts: Mack will be the man in Indy. Rookie Nyheim Hines will back him up and get some carries but the expectation is, Mack will be the full time starter.

Mack should get 20 to 25 touches per game. From a stylistic standpoint, he is very similar to Jay Ajayi. Mack can run between the tackles and make defenders miss in space. He has shown he can break long runs. Mack has good hands so look for  Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni to get him involved in the passing game as well.

4. Kenyan Drake, Dolphins: Drake has more value in PPR leagues than standard leagues. Regardless, the potential is there for a breakout season in 2018. He is a three down back who is explosive in space. Drake can create one on one match-ups against nickel linebackers and safeties in space and is effective on screens. He offers big play potential. The only downside to drafting Drake. Frank Gore. Gore will get most short yardage, goal line and four minute carries.

3. Jamaal Williams, Packers: Williams is in a time share with Aaron Jones so his usage may vary. Mike McCarthy likes to ride the hot hand so Williams will be involved in the game plan every week. It is just a matter of how much. Right now I would say Williams best value is as a fourth running back. That could change however if he becomes the “guy”. Especially in red zone situations. Williams might not rush for a thousand yards but if he score 6 to 8 touchdowns, he is worth rostering.

2. Jerick McKinnon, 49ers: McKinnon will be a prime target for fantasy owners in drafts, especially in PPR leagues. McKinnon is primed for a career year in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. If Shanahan uses McKinnon like he did Devonta Freeman or Tevin Coleman in Atlanta, McKinnon could put up some big numbers as a dual threat runner. If I were in a twelve team league, I would probably draft McKinnon early. I would wait until third or fourth round in a ten team league. It is risky but there will be more value at other positions.

1A. Rashaad Penny, Seahawks:  I am buying on the rookie running back out of San Diego State. He will split carries early on with Chris Carson and C.J Prosise but Penny is a three down back who could be a factor in in the passing game as well as the return game. I am buying high on Penny, especially as the season goes on. He has the physical tools to be a three down back.

1. Alex Collins, Ravens: Collins burst onto the season last season rushing for 973 yards and 6 touchdowns on 212 carries. Collins is a violent runner who has a deceptive burst and can separate in the second level. Right now Collins projects as an RB2 and depending on what happens with second year running back Kenneth Dixon,c ould end up either an RB1 or a Flex depending on how many carries Dixon gets.
