Dartmouth hires Shane Montgomery as offensive coordinator

Former UMass offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery did not have to look very far for his next coaching job. Dartmouth College announced on Monday that Montgomery would be the school’s new offensive coordinator.

Montgomery spent last season as the offensive coordinator and interim head coach at UMass. He did a good job coaching the Minutemen the final two weeks of the season after Don Brown was relieved of his duties. The Minutemen offense came on late in the season, scoring at least 20 points in five straight games, including 42 in the season finale against UConn.

Dartmouth Head Coach Sammy McCorkle is excited about the opportunity to work with Montgomery.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Shane Montgomery to our program,” said McCorkle. “His extensive experience and success, both as a play caller and head coach, make him a valuable addition to our staff.”

Montgomery comes to Hanover with extensive head coaching and coordinating experience, both at the FCS and FBS levels. He was at Miami (Ohio) as offensive coordinator and head coach, where he coached future Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger. Overall, Montgomery has four years of head coaching experience to go with 17 years as offensive coordinator.

Montgomery is looking forward to joining the Big Green staff.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining the Dartmouth football program,” said Montgomery. “Dartmouth College is a tremendous academic institution with a storied Football tradition. I look forward to helping our student-athletes graduate with a prestigious degree, while winning conference championships and earning FCS Playoff berths.”

The Dartmouth offense has been good enough to allow the program to compete for Ivy League but if the program is going to take the next step, they need more big plays offensively and Montgomery hopes he spice up the offense.

Finding a way to replace the production of running back Q Jones will be the key this spring. Jones transferred to URI two weeks ago as a grad transfer. Running the football and setting a physical tone are keys for Montgomery. He will emphasize the ground game.

Montgomery replaces Kevin Daft who will remain with the program as quarterbacks coach.
