Bill Belichick isn’t looking to filibuster a press conference at any point in time, but Friday morning’s end of the week presser lasted roughly three minutes.
That’s short even for him. Usually, Friday’s are a bit more light-hearted and he’ll engage on just about anything, but not this time. By my count, BB said just 100 words while answering 11 questions.
‘Jets Week’ is always a big one around 1 Patriot Place, but with the 0-2 start and questions swirling around the team, focus is paramount this week. Not just focus, but a sense of urgency perhaps not seen from this team since Tom Brady was around. The players have said all the right things, but with Belichick taking as little time as possible to speak to the media in his final bit of availability before Sunday, maybe it was one final reminder to the locker room just how locked in everyone needs to be.
No time for anything other than focusing on the NYJ.
“Yeah, good. It’s Jets week, division game. Yeah, it’s been good,” he said when asked about the sense of urgency. When asked if he’s tried to convey that message throughout the week, Belichick quickly noted that every game is important. “There’s urgency every week. There’s 17 games. They’re all big games.”
When asked if he’d had any ‘bury the football’ type of moments this week, Belichick didn’t budge.
“Yeah, we get ready to play them all,” he said sternly.
Belichick’s hatred for the Jets is well established, but even after referring to it as ‘Jets Week’ several times on Friday and when he spoke earlier in the week, the HC of the NEP wouldn’t acknowledge if there was a ‘rivalry feel’ for him.
“Well, it’s a division game,” was all he mustered.
There’s always the chance that Belichick is being short with the media because he’s still unhappy with reporting during training camp, but is there a chance that maybe, just maybe, Friday’s addition to the ‘all timer’ press conference list was done with some intent behind it for his team?
With 0-3 on the table Sunday, anything is possible.
