Ohio State suspended embattled coach Urban Meyer for three games without pay on Wednesday for lying publicly about what he knew regarding former receivers coach Zack Smith abusing his ex-wife Courtney Smith.
Meyer’s suspension has been greeted with wide spread criticism and rightfully so. Meyer has shown no remorse for employing a wife beater like Smith or for publicly lying about whether or not he knew Smith was abusing his wife.
Of course Meyer plays Mickey the Dunce when it comes to Smith. After all, it is bad for business for Meyer to publicly acknowledge that he knew what Smith was doing. Unfortunately for him, it all came out and it blew up in his face.
In reality, Meyer should have been fired for employing Smith and lying but in the world of big time college football, he wins and bring money in therefore he can get away with doing what he did. Do you really think Meyer would still be the coach at Ohio State if he were .500 or below? I don’t think so.
It is sad that Ohio State and Meyer value winning over the safety of a women who was physically abused for years by her husband but that’s the sad reality of the world we live in.
In a year from now, it won’t matter what happened to the Buckeye faithful, especially if Ohio State makes a national title run. To the rest of us, we will always remember Courtney Smith.
