College Football: Week One Picks Versus the Spread

Week one is here. Here are our picks against the spread for Saturday.

Oklahoma -23 vs. Florida Atlantic: Lane Kiffin has made FAU relevant again but it won’t matter against Kyler Murray and a talented Oklahoma offense.

Houston -21 at Rice: Houston should take care of business and coverage against a struggling Rice program.

Ohio St -38 vs. Oregon St: The Buckeyes have a lot to prove without Urban Meyer and they will by skinning the Beavers and covering.

Penn St -27 vs. Appalachian St: I’m going with the Mountaineers as a road dog. I think they will keep this game close and cover as a road dog.

Nebraska -18½ vs. Akron: Scott Frost has a successful debut at home and the Huskers cover with ease.

Boston College -20 vs. UMass: UMass has enough talent to put a scare into B.C and I think they will. I’m taking the Minutemen as dogs in what should be a competitive game.

Illinois -14½ vs. Kent St: Illinois will roll and cover a rebuilding Kent State team. It might be the only time the Illini are favored this season.

Rutgers -13½ vs. Texas St: Rutgers should cover at home against Texas State. The Scarlet Knights are an easy take here.

Indiana -13 at Florida International: Give me the Panthers here as a home dog. I think I Diana wins this game but it’ll be close.

Iowa -13 vs. NIU: Northern Illinois has authored their fair share of upsets in the past. I don’t think they’ll beat Iowa but I like them as a road dog to cove.

Texas -10½ at Maryland: Texas averages last season’s home loss to Maryland in game that I don’t think will be close.

Boise St -10½ at Troy: Boise State has the talent to play spoiler this season. It wouldn’t be a surprise me if they went undefeated. They get off to a good start by covering against Troy.

Louisiana Tech -10 at South Alabama: I’m taking the Bulldogs as a road favorite. South Alabama has a new coach and schemes. That always favors the opposition week one.

Marshall Pick’EM at Miami Ohio: I hate pick em’s but that doesn’t matter. I am going to put my money on Marshall.

North Texas -1½ vs. SMU: I am going to take Sonny Dykes Mustangs as a road dog. SMU still has a lot of talent left over from the Chad Morris era.

Vanderbilt -6 vs. MTSU: Middle Tennessee can score points. I’m on the fence on this one. Part of me wants to take the Blue Raiders but I am going to go with the home team here and take Vandy.

Arizona -14 vs. BYU: Khalil Tate opens his Heisman campaign against a generous BYU defense. Arizona should cover no problem as a home favorite.

Arizona State -17½ vs. UTSA: I don’t buy Herm Edwards as the coach at Arizona State. The Devils have talent and they will win this game but not by 17.5. I like UTSA as a road in this game. They will keep this game close and lose by one score.

USC -27 vs. UNLV: SC covers comfortably against the undermanned Rebels.

UCLA -15½ vs. Cincinnati: The Chipper is starting firmer Michigan quarterback Wilton Speights. I don’t think he’s a great fit in Kelly’s offense. I think UCLA wins but I like Cincy as a road dog to cover.

Auburn -3½ vs. Washington: Ooooff. This one is tough to pick. I’m taking Auburn as a home favorite but I wouldn’t blame anyone if they went with Washington as a road dog.

Kentucky -20 vs. Central Michigan: Kentucky is overhyped. I think they win but the Chips will give them all they can handle. Put your money on the Chips as a road dog.

Mississippi -1½ at Texas Tech: Give me The Red Raiders as a home dog. This game will be a shootout and that type of game favors Texas Tech at home.

South Carolina -31½ vs. Coastal Carolina: Jake Bentley and company roll at home and cover what is a big number.

West Virginia -7 vs. Tennessee: I think this will be a close game. It’s hard to pick against Will Grier and the Mountaineers but I don’t see them covering in this game. Tennessee plays them tough. That’s why I am taking them as a dog in this one.

California -6 vs. North Carolina: North Carolina has several players suspended and they have to travel to California. Give me the Bears.

Washington St -4 at Wyoming: It’s hard to pick against a Craig Bohl coached team but I am going with Mike Leach’s Cougars to cover on the road as favorites.

Oregon -28½ vs. Bowling Green: Justin Herbert and company will turn this game into a shootout and as a result, they will cover.

Old Dominion -5½ at Liberty: Give me Bobby Wilder’s Monarchs as a road favorite.

Notre Dame -2 vs. Michigan: I am buying into the Shea Patterson hype and as a result, I am putting my money on Michigan as a road under dog.

Alabama -28½ vs. Louisville: Neutral site and a ridiculous spread equals me taking Louisville as a dog. Why not? Alabama has a lot of question marks at quarterback and the defense is young. Don’t get me wrong. I still think Bama will win.

Navy -15 at Hawaii: Give me Hawaii as a home dog to pull off the upset of Navy. The Midshipmen being two touchdown favorites is absurd.,
