If the vile allegations against Maryland Head Football Coach D.J Durkin and members of his staff in the aftermath of Jordan McNair’s death are true, then Durkin should be fired.
The University of Maryland announced today that strength coach Rick Court was relieved of his duties and received a $315,000 buyout. Could Durkin be next?
I don’t see how Durkin survives this? A player died on his watch. That is the worst possible thing that could happen to a coach and his staff. What makes it worse is the fact that the medical staff failed to follow emergency protocol and failure to do so may have contributed to McNair’s death.
I always preach due process, especially when allegations are levied against someone publicly. However, the evidence against Durkin and his staff is overwhelming. It is obvious that they mistreated their players and they neglected the needs of one of their player’s which ultimately led to their death. Durkin should get due process but ultimately, he and his staff are guilty of the accusations levied against them.
Many people on social media have called for Maryland to receive the death penalty. That is a complete overreaction. The school shouldn’t receive the death penalty but they along with the medical staff and Durkin and his staff should be held accountable for McNair’s death and the treatment of the players.
Unlike Urban Meyer, I don’t see how Durkin survives this. At least Meyer has a shot whether you agree with it or not. Durkin does not. There is no place in the game for the mistreatment. Durkin and those involved need to be held accountable. It is the least the University of Maryland can do.
