College Football: Fifteen Thoughts As Training Camps Kick Off

Alabama and Clemson could lock horns in the National championship game again.

With training camps opening up across the National this weekend, here are ten thoughts on the upcoming college football season.

1. Alabama and Clemson are the two best teams in the country going into this season. Both programs are loaded with talent and are well coached.

2. The Urban Meyer, Zach Smith scandal will derail what could have been a potential playoff season for the Buckeyes.

3. Bryce Love of Stanford is the early Heisman favorite but don’t be surprised if Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert walks away with the award the second weekend of December.

4. It may seem like a bit of an overstatement, but I truly believe that Jim Harbaugh is on at the hot seat at Michigan. Another mediocre season and another bowl loss and the fan base will be asking for his job. Quarterback Shea Patterson will be key for the Wolverines.

5. Remember the name J.T Daniels. The true freshmen could end up being USC’s starting quarterback this season.

6. Texas A&M will push Alabama and Auburn right out of the gate in the SEC West. Like him or not, Jimbo Fisher can coach. His pro-style offense will give teams fits. Especially if he incorporates spread concepts.

7. Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin and Nebraska will get all the pub going into the Big Ten to start the season but Michigan State could be the best team in the conference at season’s end. With 19 of 22 starters back including quarterback Brian Lewerke and running back L.J Scott, the Spartans will be very good on both sides of the ball.

8. The new redshirt rule will have a major impact on college football this season, especially early on. It will give the blue blood programs an opportunity to play impact freshmen. It will also give middle of the pack programs a chance to compete by playing freshmen at various points in the season. It will make this season interesting.

9. All eyes will be on Rocky Top in the SEC. Jeremy Pruitt was a great hire but given how the hiring process unfolded in Knoxville, people will have their doubts.

10. Boston College running back A.J Dillon will approach the 2,000 yard mark and be a Heisman finalist.

11. Speaking of Heisman finalist, Arizona quarterback junior Khalil Tate put up video numbers in Rich Rodriguez’s offense. He could top those numbers in Kevin Sumlin’s offense.

12. All eyes are on Texas. Does Tom Herman go with Sam Ehlinger or Shane Buechele as the Horns starting quarterback? My money is on Ehlinger. He’s a better fit in the offense despite the fact that he is the lesser passer.

13. Florida will win ten games in Dan Mullen’s first season back in the swamp. They will challenge Georgia in the SEC East.

14. This will be Lane Kiffin’s last season at Florida Atlantic. He will land a bigger job in 2019.

15. Ten programs that will turn heads in 2018.

Nebraska, Tennessee, Arizona, Mississippi State, Utah, Duke, Kentucky, Purdue, UCLA, Boston College
