WALLINGFORD- Coming into the week, we all knew the Choate, Avon Old Farms game could be the game of the year in Connecticut and in the region but I am not sure anyone thought it would come to a game winning 43 yard kick.
In a game featuring several high profile players with FBS offers, it was Choate junior Marc Cappuccitti who would emerge the hero for the Wild Boars in the 17-14 win.
Perhaps the best part of all this is the fact the Mississauga, Ontario native is the punter. He is not the regular kicker. That was Marc Dumont but he tore his ACL a few weeks back. That is what makes this ending all the more remarkable. It’s out of a movie script.
Despite the unbelievable finish of the game, it was marred by penalties specifically in the fourth quarter. The defenses dominated for most of the game but the offenses came to life in the second half, specially Choate’s.
Avon Old Farms would open the scoring on a 12 yard touchdown run by Kharon Craig. Choate however would tie the game right before the half when quarterback Nick Rubino would connect with Jadon Spain on the first of two touchdown passes.
The game was tied at 7-7 at the half but Avon would break the tie in third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Owen Moreland. The Winged Beavers appeared to be in control of the game at that point but Rubino and Spain would connect again on a spectacular catch by Spain on a fade ball to tie things up at 14.
It would remain that way for most of the quarter as penalties stymied drives by both teams. Rubino and the Wild Boars would put together one final drive however to set up the game winning field goal.
Rubino talked about the win and how he felt during the kick.
“It was really a great team win. Everybody contributed to it. Defense held them down at the end to get us the ball back and we knew we would have a shot to win it if we moved the ball into field goal range. We did just that and clocked the ball with four seconds left to give Cap a shot to hit it and he was right down the middle.”
Rubino added: “It was a great win for our program. Our coaches had us very prepared to play and we all executed. The fans (boar pen) came out in force to support us too. It was awesome.”
With the win, Choate improves to 7-0. Avon Old Farms drops to 6-1. Choate hits the road next Saturday for a big game at Deerfield. Avon wraps up its regular season with a game against Salisbury.
