Changes are coming to the UConn quarterback room. Nick Evers, who originally committed to Oklahoma in the Class of 2022 and later transferred to Wisconsin is now transferring to UConn.
Evers was a four star recruit coming out of Flower Mound, Texas. He chose Oklahoma over offers from Florida (He originally committed to the Gators), Auburn, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisville, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Penn State, TCU, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech and others.
Evers put up some impressive numbers in his high school career. He threw for over 5,000 yards, 44 passing touchdowns and scored 18 rushing touchdowns in his junior and senior seasons.
Despite the success, Evers never really got the chance to be the starter at either Oklahoma or Wisconsin. He now he is looking for an opportunity to potentially play more and compete for a starting job. He will be competing against Joe Fagnano, Tucker McDonald and true freshmen Cole Welliver, a fellow Texas native.
The 6-3 200 pound Evers was a three star recruit in the portal and is a big addition for the Huskies. Jim Mora and his staff have recently bolstered the offense by adding receivers Skyler Bell, also from Wisconsin, and TJ Sheffield from Purdue.
The Huskies quarterback room looks drastically different than it did two years ago in Mora’s first season when it also featured true freshmen Zion Turner, Penn State transfer Ta’Quan Roberson and Oregon transfer Cale Millen.
Roberson announced on Wednesday that he is transferring. He was a four star recruit coming out of high school. He transferred to the Huskies from Penn State prior to the 2022 season.
Roberson won the starting job that summer but tore his ACL on the opening series against Utah State in the season opener. He lost the starting job to Fagnano prior to last season but when Fagnano got injured in Week Two and was forced to miss the season, Roberson stepped in and threw for 2,075 yards and 12 touchdown passes.
Turnover is a fact of life in college football these days but now the Huskies will have a legitimate quarterback competition on their hands this summer with the addition of Evers.
New offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis and the offensive staff will have a lot to evaluate the rest of this spring and summer as they try to sort through who should be the starter in 2024.
