Catching up with Webber Marx after his commitment to Dartmouth

We had an opportunity to catch up with St. Paul’s quarterback Webber Marx after his commitment to Dartmouth last week.

Here is what Webber had to say as to why he chose the Big Green.

NEFJ: What made Dartmouth the right fit for you athletically and academically?

WM: “Many schools have great athletics, but few have the same academic strength as Dartmouth. Growing up, academic and athletic success have been key parts of my identity, and Dartmouth offers an opportunity to excel in both. Dartmouth football is simply well-respected and successful.”

NEFJ: What went into the decision? Who did you lean on when you decided to pick Dartmouth?

WM: “Many things went into my decision. I wanted to ensure that I have the ability to maximize my experience at Dartmouth, and the coaching staff confirmed this. Additionally, I want to attend a school that could set me up for a successful future. As far as football goes, the coaching staff is exactly what I was looking for. Coach McCorkle, Coach Montgomery, and the rest of the staff made me feel wanted, which was ultimately why I decided on Dartmouth. My official visit was intentional, and I thank my new coaches for allowing me to have such a positive experience. After my official visit, I leaned mostly on my parents and the rest of my family. They have always been a great outlet for me when big decisions present themselves.”

NEFJ: What have the coaches at Dartmouth told you in regards to a timeline for you to play?

WM: “Although there are high expectations for me, nothing is promised at Dartmouth. I am going to work my absolute hardest, and have been promised a fair shot when I am ready to go.”

NEFJ: How important was it to you to stay closer to home? Was it a factor at all in your decision?

WM: “Staying close to home was not a huge factor in my decision; however, it will be nice to see my family often.”

NEFJ: What appealed to you about playing in the Ivy League? The education speaks for itself but what did you like about the football?

WM: “The Ivy League has a great, competitive atmosphere. It provides a fantastic opportunity to grow close with your teammates and coaches. There is also something to be said for the coaches who believed in me from the second I met them. There are many small benefits within the Ivy League. First, there are minimal interactions with the transfer portal, which allows the team to grow and develop together. Next, an Ivy League degree is second to none, and if I have a successful career, my journey with football can continue through a fifth year and possibly beyond.”

NEFJ: How cool is it to realize your childhood dream of playing Division 1 College Football?

WM: “I am blessed to be in this position. It is a dream come true. My younger self would be proud; however, I know my story is just getting started.”
