We had a chance recently to talk to Avon Old Farms quarterback Trevor Havill. Havill announced last week that he was committing to Yale University to play football and lacrosse.
Playing two sports was important to Havill and when Yale presented him with the opportunity to play both, he could not pass it up.
Trevor tells us why he wanted to play sports and why he ultimately chose Yale.
NEFJ: Why Yale? What made you decide that Yale was the best fit for you academically and athletically?
TH: “When the opportunity was presented to me to go to Yale, I could not pass it up. The combination of a world class education and playing the two sports I love was just too good an opportunity, so I pretty quickly committed.”
Havill added: “Both football and lacrosse are competing for league, and in the case of lax, national titles every year. The coaching and facilities are truly best in class. As far as the education, Yale’s reputation and alumni success speaks for itself!!”
NEFJ: What was the process like when it came to making the decision to go to Yale? Was it your decision or did family play a role in it?
TH: “Both my father and I spent a lot of time discussing the decision. Yale checked every box!”
NEFJ: Playing two sports in college is tough and requires a lot of commitment. It is even harder at a school like Yale. Why do you feel you are ready to keep up with such a rigorous schedule?
TH: “Yes, two sports will be a challenge, but I have always been at my best when I am pushed the hardest. I am confident I can succeed with both, my school work and getting ready for life after Yale!”
NEFJ: Talk about having the opportunity to play for Coach Reno and the staff at Yale. How much did that factor into your decision?
TH: “The football program is championship caliber. That’s evident by their past successes on the field. The program also provides players the ability to get to the next level if that is their goal. Coach Reno and the entire staff have built something special, and I want to be a part of that tradition going forward. It is also important to me that Coach Reno and a lot of the staff have been at Yale for a long time. Being confident that I will have the same coaches for my 4 years matters.”
Havill is poised for a big season for an Avon Old Farms teams that returns several key players, especially along the offensive line.
Bulldog fans, make sure you watch Havill play this season. He will be the future for your program at the quarterback position.
