Choate Rosemary Hall quarterback Nick Rubino committed to Wake Forest earlier this week. We caught up with Nick to get his thoughts on why he committed to Dave Clawson and the Demon Deacons.
Rubino, a Miami native held offers from UMass, Bryant, Columbia, Penn and Princeton but ultimately chose Wake Forest because of the school and his relationship with Clawson and offensive coordinator Warren Ruggerio.
Nick chatted with us prior to a family trip and this is what he had to say.
NEFJ: Why Wake Forest? What appealed to you about the school?
NR: “I camped at Wake in the summer of 2022 and loved the feel there. It has the perfect mix of great football with very strong academics. I first met Coach Ruggiero and Coach Clawson at that camp and immediately felt that Wake was a place that I would like to call home.”
NEFJ: Have you discussed future playing time and what Coach Clawson and the staff envision for you?
NR: “Coach Ruggiero and I talked about that the other day. I feel that he will definitely give every QB in the room an opportunity to compete for the starting job and that is all I really want. If I am the best guy for the job, I will start. If not, I’ll keep working and competing.”
NEFJ: How much did playing close to home factor in this decision for you?
NR: “Not at all. As you guys know, I am from Miami and went up to Choate in CT for 11th and 12th grade. I did that because the opportunity at Choate with Coach Spinnato was too good to pass up. As for college, I was open to anywhere in the country. Both academics and athletics were a factor in my decision. Much like Choate, the opportunity to play for Coach Ruggiero at a great university like Wake was a no brainer for me. I can’t wait to get on campus and begin my college career.”
NEFJ: How does it feel to be committed and done with the process? Are you relieved?
NR: “It is great to be done and committed. I really feel like after all was said and done, that I ended up at the perfect school for me. Great school, great academics, great coaches, Power 5, great city. The recruiting process was definitely a grind at times but like everyone says, “everything happens for a reason.” I definitely believe that, as I feel like I have found the perfect home at Wake Forest.”
Nick is one of the most mature and talented young men I have covered the past three years. He is a pleasure to cover. We are looking forward to big things for him at Wake Forest.
