Brissett ready to excel in whatever role he has

Days before the Patriots have their first OTA practice on Monday, Jacoby Brissett met with the media on Thursday for the first time since signing back with his first team.

Brissett has been labeled as just a mentor for Drake Maye. While he wants to compete and win games, Brissett also is confused as to why people believe that’s a bad thing.

“When I was here the first time…you realize everyone is your mentor that’s older than you,” he said. “When people ask that to other guys, I don’t understand the bad part. I’m a teammate first. I hope I can be a great teammate to not only him, but everybody else on the team.”

Brissett was also asked how different things feel around the building since the last time he was here since there’s been a few small changes around Foxborough…

“It’s been really fun. (Jerod) brings a lot of good energy,” he said. “The cool thing is, you can tell that he’s trying to make the players run the team. Obviously, he’s the head coach and sets the standard and things like that, but he definitely puts a lot of responsibility on us players and I actually like it.”

As far as whether or not he’s going to be a starter or ‘just a mentor,’ whatever happens, happens. As long as the New England Patriots are winning football games, Brissett is all in.

“I love the energy that’s going on in the building and what guys are bringing every day,” he added. “I’m excited for it…I have no ego in this. Whatever’s meant for me is gonna happen for me. Whatever’s gonna happen for the next person is gonna happen for the next person. It’s about being ready whenever tour time comes.

“The thing that got me to that mindset was my first year here, I’m the third string QB my rookie year. Get no reps in training camp or OTA’s with the first team and Week 2 I’m in the game vs. the Dolphins, you know? You never know when your opportunity is going to come. It’s just about being ready.”
