Breaking Down the Clemson Rub Play Against Alabama

By John Sarianides
Clemson beat Alabama on a last second touchdown pass from Deshaun Foster to Hunter Renfroe. The play is mired in controversy because Alabama and their fans think Clemson committed offensive pass interference on the play.

I tend to agree with them. I think it was offensive P.I but Renfroe got away with it. Give Dabo Swinney and co-coordinators Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott. They made a great call. They sprinted out Watson and gave him a run, pass option. Watson threw it and the rest is history.

Rub routes are common in the red zone area. Alabama can whine all they want but the reality is, they were in man coverage and they got picked. Both defenders should have been back more and they should have switch the routes but they didn’t and they gave up the score.

Pick or no pick, it doesn’t matter. Clemson won. They beat Alabama fair and square. They were the better team and in the end, they were the best team in the country.

In the end, that’s all that matters folks.
