If the Padres really want Sandoval, the Red Sox need to make it happen.
Rumors were swirling yesterday that the Red Sox and Padres have had discussions about Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval. According to industry sources, the Padres want Sandoval and a top prospect for pitcher James Shields. The Red Sox would also have to eat some of Sandoval’s contract. If I were Dave Dombrowski, I would do everything I can to make this deal happen.
This potential deal makes sense for two reasons. One: Sandoval is a bad fit with the Red Sox. The rest of the league knows it as well. As a result, he’ll be tough to trade. This might be the only way the Red Sox get out from his contract. Two: The Red Sox need another starter. Shields has two years left on his current deal. “Big Game” James knows the A.L East having pitched in the division with the Rays. He’s not the pitcher he once was but he would be the second starter in the Red Sox rotation right now.
I think deal is a no brainer for the Red Sox. They need to move Sandoval but they also need to be smart about it. I wouldn’t give up an elite prospect in the deal but if were Dombrowski, I would certainly entertain giving up a Single A type prospect. Even if that prospect projects as a future major leaguer. The Red Sox need to find a way to move Sandoval. If this potential trade is the only way to do it, then Dombrowski needs to make it happen.
