As expected, the Bailey Zappe potential starter questions came up during Bill Belichick’s usual Monday morning press conference after the embarrassing loss in Dallas.
While it’s a fair question given how poorly Mac Jones played with three turnovers, Belichick quickly squashed the idea – for now.
“I doubt anything would change significantly,” he said. “But, we’ll talk about that. I don’t know. We haven’t gotten to that point yet.”
Belichick was also asked about Jones’ decision making – which was downright horrible on Sunday – as well as Zappe’s preparation as a backup.
“Well, I mean, everything gets highlighted by one or two plays, one way or another. In general, I think he makes pretty good decisions,” Belichick said of Jones. “He sees things well, but obviously, as a team, we can’t win turning the ball over three times in a game, two for touchdowns. We’ve got to do a better job of that. That’s everybody’s responsibility. The quarterback’s part of it, so is everybody else.”
“Bailey works hard. He’s in here early, stays late,” he added. “He spends a lot of time looking at film, studying what we do, what our opponents do, and he prepares very well.”
While the questions are fair regarding the quarterback situation considering Jones still hasn’t proven he can be “the guy” now three years in, he’s still probably the best option. If Zappe is playing significant time, that means this season is going nowhere. It might not be already, but it’s still only Week 5. It’s understandable why Belichick wouldn’t want to pull the plug on Jones just yet, but you’ve got to think the leash is going to get shorter and shorter as we move forward. Sunday was more of a team snowball effect than anything else, especially with the injuries mounting.
“What I said yesterday is, I feel like we’re better than what we played yesterday,” Belichick added. “I definitely believe that. That wasn’t our best game. So, we’re capable of more than that. We’ve got to work to do better than that.”
