The High School Football season has officially kicked off in New England with all six states playing high school football.
Now that all six states are back in action, here is this week’s High School Journal.
Connecticut kicks off: The CIAC football season kicked off this week and many of the state’s heavyweights held serve, winning their season openers.
New Canaan beat Newtown 30-10 and once again proved they are the favorite in Class L. Greenwich and Staples had impressive wins to kick off the season in Class LL while Hand and Ansonia had strong opening week wins. Hand quarterback Bobby Reh is the real deal.
Killingly beats Hendricken in a classic: Killingly beat Bishop Hendricken, 41-32 in a classic. The win officially put the Trailblazers on the New England Football map. If you didn’t know the Allard Brothers, now you do.
Scituate bests Duxbury again: In a rematch of last season’s Division 4 Super Bowl in Massachusetts, Scituate beat Duxbury again and staked its claim as the favorite to repeat in the Division again. The dynamic duo of Jonny Donovan and Grayson Foley once again led the way.
Central Catholic makes a statement: Central Catholic made a statement in their win over B.C High on Friday night. It has been a struggle for the Red Raiders the last couple of years but John Sexton’s team is growing up before our very eyes and they have an opportunity to real announce their presence these next two weeks when they visit St. John’s Prep and host Bishop Hendricken.
Don’t rule out Bedford (N.H) yet: The Bedford Bulldogs reminded us on Friday night that they are still a factor in Division 1 in New Hampshire with a 34-14 win over Nashua South. A much stiffer test is on the horizon for Friday however when Thornton Academy visits.
Mansfield wins big in Michigan: The Mansfield Hornets beat Bedford, Michigan High School 35-14. It was an impressive win for the Hornets as they played great defense and ran the football well. Mansfield faces a stiff test this week against visiting Springfield Central.
Sharon breaks 12 game losing streak: Sharon ended a 12 games losing streak with a 30-20 win over Wareham. Sharon went to an independent schedule this season and the move appears to be paying off. Second year coach Ben Shuffain has the Eagles trending in the right direction.
Rutland (VT) Improves to 2-0. Rutland improved to 2-0 with a 33-30 shootout win over Burt & Burton. The Raiders offense has gotten off to a great start this season. Rutland was the favorite in Division 1 coming into the season and they are playing like the team to beat thus far.
St. Ray’s off to fast start: St. Ray’s in Providence is off to a fast 2-0 start with wins over Woonsocket and Coventry. Quarterback Tashaad Brown is one of the top signal callers in the state and he is playing like it thus far. The Saints are among the favorites in Division 1. That notion will be put to the test when they visit Central this week.
New Hampshire solid to start: Several power programs in New Hampshire are off to great starts. Pinkerton is 2-0 and has shut out their first two opponents. Pelham and Souhegan are both undefeated and have been dominate through two games. Exeter is also undefeated after two shootout wins. It’s a good start for some of the best programs in the Granite State.
