Patriots coach Mike Vrabel announced today that the team cut several players ahead of Tuesday’s cut down day.
Vrabel announced the following players were released.
LB R.J. Moten, RB Micah Bernard, WR Phil Lutz, DT Kyle Peko, TE Cole Fotheringham, RB Shane Watts, DT Philip Blidi, QB Ben Wooldridge, CB Jordan Polk, LB Monty Rice, G Sidy Sow, TE Jaheim Bell, CB Isaiah Bolden, G Tyrese Robinson.
The biggest surprises on the list are Sow, Bell and Bolden. Sow and Bolden were drafted by Bill Belichick. After a promising rookie season, neither could get on track in year two and three and were ultimately cut. Bell was drafted last season and while he flashed some potential at times, he was surpassed by Jack Westover in this camp. Westover’s ability to play fullback was the difference.
The other big early cut was Wooldridge. Unfortunately, the 25 year old from Louisiana did not do enough to make the roster but could get a chance elsewhere or eventually end up on the practice squad.
The Patriots have a long way to go to get to 53 so several more moves will be made between now and next Tuesday afternoon.
