The Massachusetts Pirates clinched a playoff spot after a decisive 54-31 victory over the Iowa Barnstormers on Thursday night at the Tsongas Center. The loss was Iowa’s ninth straight.

The Pirates wasted no time establishing their style of play with quarterback Kenji Bahar connecting with Teo Redding on a 43-yard touchdown pass on the very first play of the game. After an Iowa interception, the Pirates’ offense found its rhythm again, and Bahar himself ran in for a touchdown.

The defense also made a significant impact in the first half, as Destin Mack intercepted Iowa quarterback James Cahoon twice, leading directly to two additional touchdowns. One of these scores marked a historic milestone for Thomas Owens, who caught his 100th regular-season career touchdown. By halftime, the Pirates held a commanding 40-6 lead.

Despite the deficit, Iowa mounted a brief comeback in the third quarter, scoring on their first two possessions. However, Thomas Owens extinguished any hopes of a rally by hauling in his third touchdown reception of the game, extending the Pirates’ lead to 47-19 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw both teams trade touchdowns, with Bahar adding his third rushing touchdown of the night. Iowa’s Quian Williams and Khaleb Hood also found the end zone, but the Pirates pulled away, closing out the game with a 54-31 final score.

Owens’ brilliant performance in the game brought his career regular-season touchdown total to 101. He is the greatest player in team history and has had a Hall of Fame caliber career. The Pirates are now set to face the Tulsa Oilers on the road next in crucial match-up in the Eastern Division.
