The Patriots will have a major leadership void heading into training camp. Head coach Mike Vrabel and his staff will be counting on guys to step up and replace David Andrews, Jonathan Jones and Deatrich Wise. All three were experienced, Super Bowl winning players who were respected in the locker room and led by example.
Replacing the three will be difficult but there are several players on the roster who could step up and fill the void.
Here are eight players who could emerge as leaders for the 2025 Patriots.
Drake Maye, QB: The second year quarterback has a golden opportunity to take the reins as the undisputed leader of this football team. Your quarterback has to be one of your leaders regardless of how long they have been in the league. Maye has a chance to step up and take on a greater role, both on the field and in the locker room.
Hunter Henry, TE: Henry has been one of the Patriots unofficial leaders for the past few seasons and with Andrews gone, he has a chance to become even more vocal on the offensive side of the ball and for the entire team. Henry leads by example. He works hard and is a consummate professional. He will be counted on to step up and take on an even greater role as one of the key veterans on this team.
Morgan Moses, OT: Moses laid the ground work for being one of the team’s leaders after his passionate press conference when all of the veteran free agent additions were introduced to the local media. He will be a leader along the offensive line and he has a chance to become a team leader. He is a respected veteran who has been in the league for a long time. When he speaks, the entire team will listen. Specifically the younger players.
Harold Landry III, EDGE: Landry is the same boat as Moses but he will be counted on to be a leader on the defensive side of the ball. He did not just get the big contract to produce on the field, he is going to need to bring some much needed veteran leadership to a unit and a team that sorely needs it, especially on the defensive side of the ball where filling the leadership roles of Wise and Jones will be important.
Christian Gonzalez, CB: Gonzalez is going into his third season and he has an opportunity to take on more of leadership role with Jones gone, especially in the secondary. Gonzalez is a mild mannered, quiet person by nature. He is all business however. He isn’t the rah-rah type. He works hard and he lets his practice and playing habits do the talking. Gonzalez will naturally lead this team as one of its best players. He will set a tone in camp.
Brendan Schooler, DB/ST: You can make an argument that Schooler has been the Patriots best player the past two seasons. He has taken the mantle from Matthew Slater as the leader of the special teams and he will be counted on to be a team leader as well.
Jabrill Peppers, S: Peppers could be one of the emotional leaders of the team but he will have to prove that last season’s off the field problems are a thing of the past. If he does, Vrabel and the coaching staff will lean on Peppers to be a veteran leader both defensively and collectively.
Will Campbell, OT: I don’t care that Campbell is a rookie. He will have the opportunity to emerge as the leader of the offensive line this season and will be one of the team’s top leaders in the next two years. Campbell is passionate, committed and honest. All traits you want in a leader.
