Camp season kicks off with jam packed Mega Camp at Boston College

The month of June kicks off camp season in the sport of football and Boston College hosted their first annual Mega Camp on Sunday at Chestnut Hill.

Over 500 players participated in the camp. The players were measured, tested and did on field drills as part of the day long event. 75 plus colleges ranging from the FBS and FCS levels to Division 3 were on hand.

The players were registered in the Fish Field House and were then measured. From there, they went straight to testing where they did traditional testing and then they went to Alumni Stadium for drill work with the Boston College Coaching Staff and coaches from other schools who opted to work the camp.

Players reported in three different time slots. Specialists at 8:00 am, skill players at 12:00 pm and lineman at 4 pm. The camp was scheduled to wrap up at 7:30 pm.

We got a lot of positive feedback from high school coaches and parents. The only complaint was the lack of college coach exposure for recruits. To be fair, we were not present in any area where college coaches could have met with recruits so I am sure at some point, they got to talk to players they are recruiting.

Mega Camps have been all the rage nationally and they have made their way to New England in recent years with the Best of New England Camp out in Springfield and John Papas’ New England Elite Camp which is more of a traditional padded camp than a showcase camp.

In this era of the transfer portal and NIL, Mega Camps are virtually important for young men looking to get recruited. We always encourage young men to proceed with caution however when it comes to camps. Pick the right camps for you as a recruit. Don’t just attend any camp. Keep it to three camps maximum. Over spending on camps does not equal being recruited more.
