When Merrimack College made the leap to Division I FCS, the program accepted an unspoken challenge: prove you belong, every single week.
Now navigating life as an FCS Independent, the Warriors are taking on a slate packed with FBS programs and FCS heavyweights. Far from shrinking from the moment, Merrimack is doubling down on its identity—defined by relentless toughness, physical play, and an unwavering desire to test themselves against the best.
At the heart of this fearless mindset is Head Coach Mike Gennetti. Having spent nearly two decades in North Andover as a defensive coordinator before taking over the reigns, Gennetti understands the program’s DNA better than anyone.
Playing an independent schedule means stepping out of the comfort zone of a traditional conference structure. The Warriors’ slates regularly feature daunting road environments—from Power 4 opponents like Wake Forest to formidable FCS competitors like Delaware and Tarleton State.
Where others might see a grueling road ahead, Gennetti sees opportunity.
“There’s positives, there’s negatives like everything else in life, and it is just about how we approach it and how we handle it,”
Rather than focusing on the external noise or underdog status, Gennetti’s core philosophy hinges on a concept he calls “STRAIN”—pushing players to relentlessly fight through adversity, both on the field and off it.
“Our guys [need] to understand that things are not always gonna go their way in football and in life,” Gennetti explained. “The best ways to handle that are to attack those problems and to strain through them, and to find answers for all the things you are working towards.”
To compete against higher-profile programs, a team must bring an edge to every practice and snap. That physical, blue-collar ethos—dubbed “Mack Tough” around Duane Stadium—has become the team’s calling card.
Gennetti has continually praised his group’s willingness to embrace the grind when prepping for steep competition.
“I liked the compete level of the guys, really getting after it,” Gennetti said after evaluating his squad’s preparation. “I really just like the way the guys came out with the right mindset, the right enthusiasm, the right energy… At the end of the day, that’s who Merrimack is. That’s what we have to be.”
As the Warriors continue to build their brand on the national stage, the standard remains simple: put a product on the field that reflects the work put in behind closed doors.
“I’m hoping to put the most competitive and ferocious team on the field as I possibly can,” Gennetti emphasized. “These guys have worked really, really hard, and we’re excited for the season.”
Merrimack isn’t looking for shortcut paths to victory. By seeking out top-tier competition and meeting it with a hard-nosed, disciplined mentality, Mike Gennetti’s Warriors are ensuring that no matter the opponent, Merrimack Football will compete for four quarters.
