Holy Cross Pro Day recap

WORCESTER – The final stop on the four-day tour for NFL scouts in New England was Worcester and specifically, Holy Cross on Thursday afternoon.

About 25 potential draft prospects had one final chance to put some good stuff on tape or, show off for the handful of scouts that were in attendance. The Ravens, Patriots, Packers and 49ers were on physically on hand, while the rest of the league will get results and film in the days to come.

Numbers weren’t immediately available for the media, but it was hard not to be impressed with a few on-field performances.

There was also a bit of a reunion feel, as a bunch of Merrimack players – all of whom played under current HC head coach Dan Curran – got the chance to show what they could do. A number of UNH players were also in the building, as well as players from Brown, AIC and Endicott. Pat Conroy – who played TE and H-back for Curran – also had the chance to compete, representing Old Dominion.

One particular guy who stood out was Merrimack DE/LB Jay Thompson, who appeared to move well in the 40-yard dash for a big guy as well as the on-field drills. He and the other Warriors were grateful for Curran’s willingness to open up the doors to his new program.

“It means the world,” said Thompson. “Especially coming from (having played) for Coach Curran, he recruited me coming out of high school. That’s been my guy and we’ve been rolling for a long time.”

Running back Jermaine Corbett, OL Cole Bidow and really, each of the 11 Merrimack guys on hand also did well for themselves.

UNH had several players stand out, including QB Seth Morgan, who showed an ability to make every throw on the field, as well as DB/KR/RB Caleb Mead – who seemingly flew in the 40 and gives off Dylan Laube vibes – and DL/LB Zedane Williams. Arguably the CAA’s best defensive player last year Josiah Silver didn’t run the 40, but looked solid in all of the on-field work, particularly his three-cone and shuttle.

Both Conroy and Brown tight end Mark Mahoney had strong days catching the ball and both looked fluid running the 40. Sediki Kone (RB/KR) from AIC was exceptionally fast and caught the ball well out of the backfield too.

As for the two Holy Cross guys, both Frankie Monte (LB) and wide receiver Justin Shorter showed why Holy Cross has had several players make it to and have an impact for NFL teams the last handful of seasons. Monte showed excellent sideline-to-sideline range during on-field work and Shorter’s speed, route running and ability to catch almost anything thrown his way was on full display.

Both guys acknowledged it’s a relief that this part of the process is now over, but having ‘home field advantage’ certainly made things a little less nerve-racking.

“We’ve been training for this for a long time,” said Monte. “I think after the season I probably took like, three weeks off and then got right to training with this one goal in mind, completing this day, excelling and doing my best. I definitely left it all out there today and I’m just excited that I did that.

“It was a home field advantage. I’ve practiced and ran on this field thousands of times throughout my four years here. So, it’s just right in my backyard and it felt good to be at Holy Cross. It feels right.”

“I’m very relieved,” added Shorter. “Ran some good times, had a good day out there. My indy was smooth. I put the routs on tape for them and everything. Speed within the routs was good, breaking down was good, now…it’s just getting ready to play actual football, getting ready for a camp and getting signed and everything.

“It was real comfortable. Even the warmup part, like, I know where everything is. I knew where the facilities were. I didn’t have to ask anybody, just being comfortable preparing in warmups that was a lot easier than if you were (at a Pro Day) at another school.”

With the hay now in the barn, everyone that participated on Thursday has checked off one of the biggest boxes of the pre-draft process and now, the chips can simply fall where they may.
