NEFJ Nuggets from Patriots training camp: Day 13

FOXBOROUGH – Monday was a light day as the Pats get ready to welcome Philly for a very important joint practice on Tuesday.

The team only went about an hour and a half on Tuesday, unpadded of course. The Eagles will practice with the Pats on Tuesday ahead of Thursday’s second preseason game. Here’s everything that stood out hillside during the penultimate training camp session…

-As usual Michael Jordan and Sidy Sow were first out.

-The Pats’ defensive coaches met with the media prior to the start to practice. Calling Dont’a Hightower ‘Coach’ is still weird to me considering my fandom was still as rabid as ever during his playing days. He’s also still jacked and could probably smoke someone in a hole right now.

-Huge crowd on hand, probably one of the biggest of camp. Understandable considering it was a perfect day for it.

-Refs were in the house for just the second time this camp. We saw plenty of flags thrown too.

-Stretching and indy lasted until about 11:35 when the first team period started, which was mostly run game centric. There was one sick grab by Ja’Lynn Polk on the sideline over Isaiah Bolden on a bullet from Joe Milton.

-Red zone 7-on-7 around 11:40…

*Brissett – crosser to Pop Douglas, incomplete out to Stevenson, nice throw for a TD to Tyquan Thornton in the back of the end zone, incompletion, holding on Alex Austin, incomplete to Mitchell Wilcox with Jabrill Peppers in coverage.
*Maye – Christian Gonzalez drops a pick, Jalen Reagor drops a TD in the back left corner, quick out to Douglas, absolute dart to Javon Baker for a TD between Schooler and Dial, similar TD throw to Jaheim Bell, incompletion to the back left corner looking for Boutte. Maye has thoroughly outperformed Brissett in most red zone periods this camp.

-Kick off work up next for a few minutes.

-First team period a couple minutes before noon…

*Brissett – Austin Hooper makes a great leaping grab, short Stevenson run, short pass to Pop, Gibson run, Stevenson run, short completion to Pop.
*Maye – Gibson stuffed, dump off to Gibson, run for Hasty, Oshane Ximines bats down a screen, screen to Polk. Defense told to run a lap for a Deatrich Wise offside, false start (didn’t see who), quick crosser to Reagor.

-Back to a team red zone period…

*Brissett – Tavai would-be sack, good run for Stevenson, ugly over throw looking for Thornton in the end zone, short run for Gibson, defense takes another lap for substitution issues, TD in the back of the end zone to Reagor on a pick play against Gonzalez, PBU for Tavai.
*Maye – throwaway, Harris stuffed on a run, PBU by Mikey Victor on a jump ball against Baker (great play), false start, Hasty TD run, easy TD to Polk on a roll out.

-Joe Milton took six snaps in a ‘normal’ team period with Pettus getting a pick on a tipped ball by Giles-Harris being the lone ‘highlight’ of this quick few minutes.

-Half speed red zone work for a few more minutes until Mayo calls the team up at 12:31, wrapping up the light day.

Tuesday’s session with Philly will be massively important for a lot of guys and is open to the public. Gates open at 9:30 with practice set to start at 10:30 – a half hour earlier than usual. Should be intense, physical and maybe the best look we see in all of preseason for some ‘real’ football. This is also the final training camp practice that is open to the public.
