Top 50 Patriots Prospects: #45: Darrell Simpson, OT, Tulsa

Simpson is another scheme versatile swing tackle who can play guard or tackle in the NFL. He has a massive frame and can be hard to deal with, especially inside at guard where he routinely mauls people in the run game.

Simpson started 12 games at right tackle in 2023. He started three games at guard on 2022. Simpson started his career at Oklahoma. He has terrific size and with some weight management, he can be a valuable swing tackle or possible starter.

Here is my scouting report on Darrell Simpson.

Darrell Simpson, OT, 6-6 345, Tulsa

Initial Quicks: Gets off the ball with some speed and has quick enough hands to gain inside leverage. Simpson has good feet for his size and is able to run them through contact and maintain body position on defenders. Simpson needs to get to the second level faster off double teams and sustain blocks when he engages defenders in space.

Run Block: Physical run blocker who finishes with power. Needs to bend more naturally and run block with a lower pad level. Simpson has a tendency to come off the ball high at times and he catches defenders. Moves well laterally for his size but doesn’t always get proper head placement on reach and scoop blocks.

Pass Block: Good short area pass blocker who moves well laterally and can punch and reset. Simpson does have a tendency to lunge at times and does not always recover if caught off balance. Uses his length to his advantage against speed rushers but would be better served playing inside as a pass blocker.

Pull & Trap: Simpson pulled in college on pin and pull and crack toss plays. Moves well enough laterally that he can get to the second level and get body position on defenders but does struggle with latching on and sustaining blocks in space.

Use of Hands: Simpson has strong hands and good upper body strength. He gets separation on contact and he keeps defenders off balance with his power. Effective drive blocker who can routinely win one on one blocks and finishes to the whistle.

Strength: Strong. Simpson can anchor down against bigger bodies and gets easy movement against undersized defenders. Pushes the pile on double teams and can reset the line of sc rimmage.

Explosion: Plays with pop but needs to bend easier especially when playing inside. Releases high on the snap and catches defenders at times when coming out of his stance. Simpson needs to learn to block with a lower pad level, especially in the run game.

Final Report: Simpson has a Top 30 visit with the Patriots. NFL teams do not waste their visits on prospects they are not interested in. Simpson is squarely on their radar. A big reason for that is his positional versatility. Simpson will need to manage his weight and improve fundamentally. If he does, he has starter potential down the road.
