All-state quarterback Caleb Smith has committed to UConn as a preferred walk on. Smith announced his decision on social media on Monday evening.
The 6-1, 185 pound Smith lead the Wreckers to an undefeated season and a Class LL state title, beating West Haven 21-20 in a classic. He threw for 1,924 yards and 21 touchdown passes this past season. Smith finished with 5,138 passing yards for his career.
He has received numerous accolades since the end of the season including being named CHSCA Player of the Year, Top 28 by the state coaches association and player of the year by the Walter Camp Foundation.
Smith is a dual threat quarterback who can make plays as a runner and as a passer. He has good size and has plus arm strength. He throws with good touch and anticipation.
He will get the opportunity to play for Huskies offensive coordinator Nick Charlton who has a history of developing quarterbacks and playing to their strengths.
UConn taking a chance on Smith is a smart move. One that could pay off down the road.
